Fence & Deck Staining

Before you hire a handyman, painting contractor or neighborhood friend to stain your deck or fence, give us a call first. Let us show you our 100% PARAFFIN oil stain (not available in ANY store) and explain why our stains are far superior to any and product purchased at the home improvement or paint store.

I get many calls each year from people wanting me to fix or remove the stain applied by a handyman or painting contractor. Sadly, if the wrong product is applied on new wood, you might not have many options. I have seen many very expensive decks ruined with the wrong product.

Hiring the wrong contractor also means they do not know how to properly clean & prep the deck or fence for staining. Failure to do a proper prep will accelerate the failure rate of the stain. They use a store bought pressure washer to blast the wood with high pressure. They typically will use the red and/or green tip that comes with the machine which only forces dirt, algae and other organic growth deeper into the wood pores. It also washes out the pulp in the wood and eventually you are left with fine layers of wood with nothing in between.

By not killing and removing algae, mildew and other organic growth, it will start to grow underneath the new stain and cause it to fail. Additionally many stains contain ingredients that provide a food source for organic growth left behind. The only way to fix it would be to chemically strip the stain off (provided it will strip) and reapply.

Call Soft Wash Solutions and have it done the right way - the first time!

Our process is a 3-step LOW pressure clean followed by an acid wash.

  1. Apply our cleaning solution to KILL mold, algae, mildew and loosen dirt & grime

  2.  LOW Pressure rinse to remove all contaminates and the top layer of dead (gray) wood fibers

  3. Apply an acid wash to neutralize the cleaning solution high PH, brighten the wood and open the pores for staining. The acid is an important step because it conditions the wood so when stain is applied, it will penetrate deep into the wood pores.

There is a right way and a wrong way to bring your fence or deck back to life. Most people buy a power washer from a big box store and blast their fence or deck with high pressure and think it is clean

High pressure actually damages the wood fibers and forces algae and grime deeper into the pores. Additional if the wrong chemicals are used, you are reducing the life of your fence or deck or risk permanent damage.

Soft Wash Solutions utilizes 4 major steps involved in properly restoring your deck or fence.

  1. Using the proper equipment to clean and strip the wood with LOW pressure. A proper mix of detergents and/or stripping agents are applied to deep clean the wood

  2. Once the wood is cleaned and free of mildew, algae and grime, an acid solution is applied. This will lower the PH of the wood and open the pores for staining. The acid will also help brighten the wood.

  3. Once the wood has dried to a moisture level of between 12% - 15%, we sand the floor and handrail tops

  4. We apply a professional grade stain (color of your choice).
